Southern Demo Optimise Operation with Steelwrist

Construction and demolition are critical industries, and the success of a business in this industry depends on both the experience of the team, as well as their ability to keep up with constantly advancing technology. Southern Demolition of Christchurch NZ not only have the experience of 40 years in the game but also understands the importance of staying ahead of the competition by adopting highly advanced technology – specifically, equipment by Steelwrist.

Let’s break down how Southern Demolition streamlined and enhanced its operation with Steelwrist technology on site. And if you’re not yet familiar with this awe-inspiring technology, check it out in this video:

About Southern Demolition

With 40 years of experience under their belt and a diverse range of contracts completed all across the country, Southern Demolition knows what it takes to stay ahead of the curve in demolition. In order to keep up with the increasingly complex nature of their projects, the team knew that they would need to invest in advanced construction technology.

To take on big projects from demolishing large fire-damaged buildings to hospital deconstruction, Southern Demolition adopted world-class specialised machinery including excavators, high-reach diggers, and a full concrete crushing plant. But to optimise their offering, the team also utilises advanced Steelwrist equipment to significantly boost their efficiency and increase productivity on site.

Because of this, Southern Demolition’s reputation continues to generate demand for its services — often through recommendations from some of the leading names in construction and civil engineering. Their expertise allows them to handle difficult and often unforeseen challenges, but their equipment and resources enable them to complete this work in a more streamlined way.

How Southern Demolition optimised their operation with Steelwrist

Demolition projects will often require the need for continuous work tool changes as team members move methodically across the site. Traditionally these tool changes would require the operator to constantly move in and out of the cab to either switch machines or switch attachments on the machine they’re using. This can result in a huge amount of time wasted, as well as an added safety risk for operators, which all add up in the long run.

To combat this, the team at Southern Demolition currently run four Steelwrist SQ70 quick couplers and one SQ60 quick coupler, taking full advantage of the SQ Auto Connection System. This innovative system allows operators to change powered work tools with the flick of a switch in a matter of seconds, without ever leaving the safety of the cab.

In regard to safety, buckets are dropped on job sites reasonably often, which can sometimes result in serious injuries – but with the Front Pin Lock solution on the Steelwrist SQ couplers, the risk of a dropped bucket is minimised, even in tough environments. With its superior performance and robust design, SQ uses automatic oil technology to connect to hydraulic work tools in a way that’s safe and streamlined.

The SQ quick system is also designed to be able to connect to attachments by other brands using the Open-S standard – allowing operators at Southern Demolition to connect to the attachments needed for each unique stage of the project.

To be able to carry out major demolition projects, the team are currently running a number of powerful attachments, such as hydraulic grabs, concrete pulverisers, a cracker jaw, rock breakers, a steel shear and a magnet. These highly practical attachments can be switched out in nearly no time, as the operator needs them for different applications on site. The amount of time saved between switches adds up in the long run, and the level of productivity achieved is unmatched.

The Result of using advanced Steelwrist technology

Olly Edge, Head of Operations at Southern Demolition, has seen the benefits of utilising Steelwrist products on site first-hand. He says the team’s downtime has been next-to-none, and the crew now uses the right tool for every job thanks to the ability to change attachments with the quick flick of a hitch switch.

This boost in productivity means the team can achieve more in less time, allowing them to more efficiently utilise their resources. They can also take on more complex projects thanks to their increased capabilities, which are becoming more and more in demand throughout the industry.

He also noticed that repairs to the equipment are also minimised now that operators are able to use the correct attachment for every specific application – instead of creating a work-around solution with unsuitable equipment. Considering the cost of repairs is an important factor to consider, as it will certainly add up in the long run.
